The collection (11900 items; dated 1946-1993) documents Humphreys' professional life as an author. It contains correspondence between Humphreys and other writers and editors; business contracts regarding publications and movie rights; handwritten and typed manuscripts and proofs for her books DREAMS OF SLEEP, RICH IN LOVE, and FIREMAN'S FAIR, as well as typescripts of works by other authors (including Robb Forman Dew and Louise Erdrich); reviews of her and others' works; and information detailing her speaking engagements and interviews. In addition, the collection contains clippings, photographs and negatives (16 black-and-white, 4 color, and 23 negatives), and audiotapes from a "Women in Literature" series. Also included are books inscribed to Humphreys and seven scrapbooks containing additional correspondence and reviews. Addition (02-304) (1 item, .1 lin. ft.; dated 2 Nov. 2000) comprises a videotape recording of a NORTH CAROLINA BOOKWATCH segment featuring Humphreys.

Karen Louise Erdrich was born June 7, 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota. The oldest of seven children, Erdrich grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota. She entered Dartmouth College (Hanover, New Hampshire) in 1972, part of the college's first coeducational class. She graduated from Dartmouth in 1976, with a Bachelor of Arts.
